While trying to capture a close up of the exchange of the rings, I noticed the girls' hypnotised looks in the background. Quick change of focus, and I got the shot. :) Taken 29th August, 2009.

Caterpillar I

Found this guy in Tomies Woods, Kerry on 2nd August, 2011. Have no idea what he is going to turn into, but I have to admit to being amazed at the complexity of it, considering the caterpillar is just a short term stage in it's development into a butterfly/moth. If anybody knows what it is, I'd love to find out. Strobist Info: 2 Yongnuo YN-460II through white umbrella, left and right and slightly above subject.

Diary of a snail shoot, 22nd July, 2011.

- Capture snail,

- Put kids to bed,

- Find strong leaf,

- Setup macro studio (2 flashes, 1 camera left with umbrella, 1 camera right with gridded snoot, behind and below subject, aiming at where snail is going to be)

- Figure out how to hold the leaf steady at the required angle (playdoh, clamp and wooden toy (One foot high, when turned on its side)

- Need spray to create moist, snail-friendly environment (1 iron with spray function)

- spray

- Get snail, and place it at the edge of the leaf

- Get focus (f27 gave very decent DOF)

- Realise that the snail isn't going to move, as it is munching the leaf where he stands

- Move snail right to edge

- spray, spray

- Notice snail has had an accident with the excitement.

- Clean up (Snail shit can ruin a good snail shot)

- spray, spray, spray

- Take some more shots

- Try to get snail on tiny leaf with spiral at the end

- Drop snail, hear crack

- Create safety net for snail out of kitchen roll

- Damage is done (shoot abandoned)

- Pack up macro studio

- Process

- Upload to photoblog

Taken 14th February, 2011. Strobist Info: 2 flashes snooted with bacofoil held by the subjects brothers, who made excellent assistants. 1 from up high, camera left aimed down at subjects face, the other camera right, aimed athe subjects midriff. INEC external wall as background.

An experimentation into long exposure, multi flash shooting. Shot, not shopped.
